Services Overview

Access for Patrons with Disabilities
To ensure access to the HSC Libraries and its services for physically disabled patrons, the HSC Libraries provide a number of special services. Patrons may contact the Access Services department for further information at 273-8498 or come to the Information Desk on the first floor of the library.

Loan Periods A valid GATOR 1 Card is needed to borrow any materials.
Books & CDs

All materials that have been recalled for return to the HSC Libraries due to a hold being placed on them are subject to double overdue fines. Please return all materials promptly to the HSC Libraries, and return all materials with holds immediately to avoid accruing fines.

Reserves
Reserves materials must be returned inside the HSC Library. Materials returned to a book drop or other campus libraries will be considered late and a fine will be assessed.

Classes in the Library
Classes on database searching and Catalog instruction are taught each semester for UF faculty, staff, and students. These classes can help to improve your Library and information searching skills. Some classes are taught through course-integrated instruction while others are offered for the whole UF community. Find a class that's right for you on our Calendar of Classes, and then use our online form to register. For further information or to arrange to have a class integrated into your curriculum, please call the Reference Department at .

The Collection
The HSC Libraries' collection supports instruction and research for the six HSC colleges. The Collection Management department orders all formats of materials and evaluates the quality and use of the materials received. Suggest an item to be purchased for the collection.

Computers
The HSC Library is a technology-enhanced facility whose users may access over 90 computers on all three floors of the Library, including several large-screen group study workstations in the Collaboration Commons. Scanning stations are available as well as private study rooms and viewing rooms for multimedia. Over 20 computers are available in the Training Room/Computer Lab on the second floor. Free wireless access is available throughout the library, and patrons not affiliated with UF may request temporary access.

Request-a-Copy & Interlibrary Loan
Find a great reference but the HSC Libraries don't have it? Interlibrary Loan can provide copies of articles and loan books from other libraries to HSC Libraries patrons at no charge. Request a Copy is a convenience service for articles in the library and sent to you electronically, The charge is $5.00 per item. For requests submitted electronically using Loansome Doc, go here

Internet Access to Library Resources
The HSC Libraries can be accessed via the Internet 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Many resources are available through our home page, such as databases, e-journals, and service information. While in the library, use any one of our 62 public access computers to connect to the Internet. From home or office, visit our website to access library resources. Liaison Librarians
Since 1999, the HSC Libraries have maintained a Liaison Librarian Program to facilitate a partnership between the Libraries and the Health Science Center colleges to support learning, research and clinical care. Liaisons provide a range of services, including reference help, assistance locating materials, receiving requests for new purchases, and collaborating on course-integrated instruction.

Lockers
The lockers housed on the 2nd floor of the Communicore building are maintained by the Health Science Center Library staff.  To check out a locker, please stop by the Information desk on the 1st floor of the library.  In order to check out a locker, you 

  •  need to be a current student
  •  have a Gator 1 card
  •  Must be enrolled in one of the six colleges of the Health Science Center

Checkout period for lockers is semester to semester – and they can be renewed.

Reserves
Current HSC students may check out course reserve materials and lockers for a limited time with their Gator 1 Card. (Study rooms may now be reserved at the Information Desk on the first floor). Audiovisual materials may be viewed in designated rooms on all 3 floors of the Library. HSC Faculty may also place course materials on reserve. Reserves materials must be returned inside the HSC Library. Materials returned to a book drop or other campus libraries will be considered late and a fine will be assessed.

Reference Assistance
The Reference, Education and Information Management department provides support for University of Florida faculty and student research as well as patient education and outreach programs for health professionals. Services include:

Overdue Fines
Fines for items with regular loan periods are as follows:

  • $0.25/day -- Books, CDs, DVDs, AVs
  • Minimum fine billed per item is $1.00 -- the maximum fine per item is $10.00.
  • The maximum overdue fine is $10.00 per item for regular loans. After 45 days, an item will be considered lost and borrowers will be assessed the actual replacement cost in addition to fines accrued.
  • The replacement cost will be the actual cost of replacing the item as quoted to the library by an authorized vendor. 
  • Replacement items supplied by library users will not be accepted. 

Fines for items with shorter loan periods are as follows:

  • $1.00 per hour (including 2hr, 3hr, 4hr and 24hr checkouts), for items including course reserves, studyroom keys and reference items
  • $0.25 per hour for periodicals / journals
  • The maximum overdue fine is $40.00 per item for short term loans, at which point an item will be considered lost and borrowers will be assessed the replacement cost in addition to fines accrued.

Photocopy and Printing
Self-service copiers and printers are located throughout the library. Black and White copiers are on all floors. A color copier is available on the 1st floor. Some copiers in the library also offer such special features as double-sided printing and top-loading. Copy machines use Gator 1 cards. Guest Copy cards are available at the Information Desk. Value must be added to the Gator 1 card and copy cards using a credit card. Go here for more information. Please report any problems to the Information Desk.
