Copyright
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted materials. It is the instructor's responsibility to ensure that copies are in compliance with the "fair use" provisions of Section 107. Reserve Request Forms include a statement of compliance regarding this provision.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

The Health Science Center Libraries reserve the right to refuse copies or reproductions that, in its judgement, would violate copyright law. Anthologies or collections of photocopies or reprints will not be accepted.

The following guidelines determine when written copyright permission is required. Copyright permission is not required of instructors in the following circumstances:
1. A single photocopy or reprint is on reserve for only one semester
2. A reasonable number of photocopies or reprints are placed on reserve for only one semester. "Reasonable" is determined by the number of students assigned to the reading, the difficulty of the reading, and the time frame for completion of the reading. Five (5) copies are usually sufficient.

Written copyright permission is required in the following situations:
1. Whenever a photocopy is placed on reserve for more than one semester, consecutive or not.
2. Whenever the item is a copyrighted workbook, test, test booklet, or answer sheet.
