Wednesday, August 30:  Opening Celebration for the Exhibition
3 pm
Ribbon cutting, welcoming remarks from HSC Libraries' Director Faith A. Meakin; Rebecca R. Pauly, MD, who is honored as a 'Local Legend' within the exhibition; and Vivian Filer, one of the College of Nursing's earliest African-American graduates ~ 1st floor of the Library

Deans' Roundtable: The Changing Face of Health Science--Deans on Diversity in Their Professions. All 6 HSC deans will speak briefly about the changing roles and achievements of women within their college over the last 50 years; Dr. Janie Fouke, UF Provost, will then moderate a discussion with the deans ~ HPNP Auditorium

Lectures with historical and sociopolitical perspectives on women's influence on health care:
Who Does The Work of Public Health? The Birth and Impact of the Women's Health Movement by Byllye Avery, M.Ed (founder of the National Black Women’s Health Project and recipient of a MacArthur Foundation 'genius' grant);
Imitation: The Sincerest Form of Flattery - The Pelvic Teaching Program and How It Has Changed Medical Practice by Betsy Randall David, RN, PhD, Center for Creative Education.

Mary Ann Burg, LCSW, PhD, director of UF’s Women's Health Research Center, will moderate a panel discussion on Whatever Happened to the Women's Health Movement?, with speakers drawn from the original founders of the Gainesville Women’s Health Center, including Byllye Avery, Betsy Randall David, Randi Cameon, Marilyn Mesh and more! Followed by a reception.

Wednesday, September 20:  Healthcare Career Fair
9 am to 3 pm

The HSC Libraries will host a healthcare career fair for students from Gainesville high schools.  Planned events include a demonstration of ‘Stan’ the Human Patient Simulator; interaction with HSC students discussing their paths 'From High School to Here' and several 'hands-on' demonstrations from staff in various fields – ‘This is what I do and why I love it.’ ~ around the HSC and Library.

Donna Parker, MD, UF College of Medicine Assistant Dean for Minority Cultural Affairs and Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics, will speak on African-American Women in Medicine, closing out September as the AMA-sponsored ‘Women in Medicine Month’ ~ Communicore rm. C1-15. *TALK CANCELLED*

A new series of RxEAD posters, featuring trailblazing women from each of the six colleges: Diane Beck, PharmD, Professor & Director of Educational Initiatives, College of Pharmacy; Cynda Crawford, DVM, Assistant Scientist, College of Veterinary Medicine; Vivian Filer, one of the College of Nursing’s earliest African-American graduates and co-founder of the Greater Gainesville Black Nurses' Association; Stephanie Hanson, Ph.D., executive associate dean and clinical professor, College of Public Health and Health Professions; Ann Harwood-Nuss, MD, Professor of Emergency Medicine & VP for Educational Affairs, College of Medicine-Jacksonville; Sylvia Kyle, Librarian of Nemours Children's Clinic, Jacksonville; Shahla Masood, MD, Professor & Associate Chair-Pathology, College of Medicine-Jacksonville; Nancy Price Mendenhall, MD, Associate Chair-Radiation Oncology & Medical Director, Florida Proton Therapy Institute; and Ann Progulske-Fox, MD, Professor & Director, Center for Molecular Microbiology, College of Dentistry.

An exhibit on ‘reflective writing’ created by the Shands Arts In Medicine program, featuring poems and essays from medical students.

Exhibit: The Changing Face of Medical Education at the University of Florida College of Medicine.  This exhibit will include a montage of colorized composite class photographs that show increasing diversity in the medical school classes, as well as quotes from discussions among current medical students and alumni, highlighted with photographs, that show the difference in the medical education experience.

CREDITS:

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), Bethesda, MD, and the American Library Association, Chicago, IL, organized the exhibition with support from the NLM, the National Institutes of Health Office of Research on Women’s Health, and the American Medical Women’s Association.  The traveling exhibition is based on a larger exhibition that was displayed at the NLM from 2003–2005.

The Libraries worked to acquire Changing the Face of Medicine with an impressive collection of HSC, UF&Shands and community groups, including: the Office of the Senior Vice President, Health Affairs; each of the six HSC college deans and the CEO of Shands HealthCare; the UF Women's Health Research Center, the Center for Precollegiate Education & Training, the Center for Women's Studies & Gender Research, and the UF chapter of the American Medical Women's Association; the Alachua County Medical Society; and the UF, Santa Fe Community College and Alachua County libraries.
