Smartphones and PDA's Smartphones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are essential tools in many people's professional and personal lives. Depending on the type and the software installed, these handheld devices can help perform a variety of tasks, such as look up phone numbers, check schedules, arrange financial services, call up critical data, and a growing variety of timely functions.

Smartphones

Smartphones are different things to different people, but they all offer tremendously increased capabilities over the simple mobile phone. More of a miniature portable computer, they can be customized with hundreds of downloadable applications to help you do what you want or need to do.

PDA's

A PDA software tool is available to help first responders when they arrive at a hazardous materials incident, such as a chemical spill. The National Library of Medicine has released WISER, the Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders. WISER provides a wide range of information on hazardous substances, including substance identification support, physical characteristics, human health information, and containment and suppression advice. A desktop and web version will also be available soon, hopefully in time for hurricane season.

PDA Choices:

• Palm
  The Swiss Army knife of portable computers. Palm devices literally fit in the palm of your hand and are used by millions to track appointments, maintain address lists, keep tabs on to-do lists, and look up reference information. With more than 5,000 Palm program software downloads available on the Internet, customization opportunities seem endless; however, downloaded schedules, lists, and spreadsheets are usually read-only.
• Pocket PCs
  Pocket PCs are Palm-like devices that use an improved Microsoft operating system (Windows CE) to run stripped-down versions of MS Word, Excel, and other programs. Pricier than Palm devices, they feature snazzy color and graphics.
