Fields Virology ~ David M. Knipe & Peter M. Howley (editors-in-chief)
Fields Virology is the most comprehensive book available that describes current work in virology. The chapters are written by leaders in the field who unknowingly have inspired my own work and the work of others. This two-volume reference book describes both accomplishments as well as current challenges. The editor of the first three editions, Bernie Fields, has been described as a mentor who fostered scientific excellence in an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect. He was involved in training young scientists, and in doing so has shaped the field of virology for years to come. His legacy lives on through this book.
Kim Van Vliet received her PhD from UF in August 2007. She continues to study virology as a post-doctoral associate here at the University of Florida.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ~ JK Rowling
The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling is a tale of magic and mystery of a young boy's adventures against the sinister forces in this world. This enchanting story touches on the aspects of life that we value the most: love, friendship, courage and strength. From the beginning, these novels had me spellbound, and the tales were so riveting that I found myself entwined in the story from day one. I eagerly anticipated the coming of each new book of the series and I am actually saddened that the tale is over, with the publication of the final (or so they say) book this past summer.
The Red Tent ~ Anita Diamant
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is an intense and vivid novel that reveals the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimmer of recognition in the Book of Genesis), the novel imaginatively tells the story of Jacob and his family from a fresh perspective. Dinah is an example for the common woman (and man), reminding us of the internal, silent and unsung glory that can occur inside each of us when we live our lives as best we can.
