Gone With the Wind ~ Margaret
Mitchell
I chose GWTW because its rich characters and complex
story have continued to reveal themselves more fully as
the years pass. I always have been attracted to Scarlett,
the leading female character who rebelled against the
restrictive social mores that downplayed the intellectual
abilities of women during that era.
As one who now teaches ethics, I find GWTW rich
with moral dilemmas and its historical depiction of
racial and cultural prejudices revealing. As such, GWTW
enables serious readers to reexamine and hopefully overcome
their own stereotypical biases today.
